Talkin' Jazz

Talkin’ Jazz is a community for young jazz musicians to meet, learn and play.

performance workshop TWO
Sept 24 - oct 5

Performance Workshop Two is an intensive, 10-day program. The program requires attendants to have a strong technical grasp of their instrument and a basic understanding of jazz theory and repertoire, a lot of which can be gained at and improved upon our fortnightly Jam Sessions.

"It was awesome to play with so many musicians with similar goals to me and hearing from the mentors."

The Workshop focuses on jazz theory, jazz history and listening as well as jazz performance skills such as improvisation, soloing, stage craft and arrangement. Regular program teachers Euan Cumming and Dan Hirsch run the workshop with support from incredible visiting mentors. Students get to learn from, jam, rehearse and work with some of Australia's best jazz musicians. At the end of the Workshop the students present a performance at the Brisbane Jazz Club supporting the main band.

"My favourite part of the workshop was getting the chance to play and develop my skills."

One of the aims of the Talkin' Jazz program is to connect young musicians with more experienced jazz musicians and educators. Over the course of the Performance Workshop guest mentors join the regular teachers to present masterclasses, performances and lessons to students. These mentors are some of Australia's best jazz musicians and all highly qualified and experienced composers and educators. We have confirmed some AMAZING mentors for this year's workshop and can't wait to announce them.

"The selection of mentors catered for everyone and they all stood out and gave us unique knowledge to utilise."

Mentors in 2017:

John Morrison, Steve Newcomb, Kristin Beradi, Brodie McAllister, Ben Hauptmann, Helen Russell, Rafael Karlen and Mal Wood.

This is a truly unique experience to meet, play with and learn from some of the best of Australian jazz.

"I found the workshop beneficial because I got to learn... in a community where everyone was accepted and supported."

PLACES ARE VERY LIMITED. WE ARE RESTRICTED TO A MAXIMUM OF 16 PARTICIPANTS ONLY.

The Performance Workshop is held during the September school holidays 24/09 - 05/10, with the performance on Sat. Oct 6.
The workshop will run 9am - 1pm*, Monday - Friday with a performance at the Brisbane Jazz Club on the evening of October 6. Students must attend the entire two weeks of the Performance Workshop. This allows us to create something truly special.
